Answering in free text

Updated on Oct 5, 2026

On a free-text question, you type the answer yourself in the answer field, then submit.

What is tolerated

Your answer is compared with the expected answer (and its accepted variants, including in the quiz's other languages) without paying attention to:

  • capital letters: "PERU" counts as "Peru";
  • accents: "perou" counts as "Pérou";
  • ligatures: "coeur" counts as "cœur";
  • hyphens, which count as a space: "Saint Exupery" counts as "Saint-Exupéry";
  • spaces at the start and the end, and doubled spaces;
  • the decimal comma: "3,14" counts as "3.14". The minus sign counts: "273.15" does not count as "-273.15";
  • a leading article (the, and the French le, la, les, l'), on both sides: "Beatles" counts as "The Beatles", and "The Beatles" counts as "Beatles";
  • the dots of an acronym: "USA" counts as "U.S.A.", and "JK Rowling" counts as "J.K. Rowling".
  • the unit after a number: when the answer is a number, "100 cents" counts as "100" and "8 legs" counts as "8". A word that changes the number still counts: "100 thousand" or "8 or 9" stay wrong.

Everything else counts: punctuation (outside acronyms), a missing space ("NewYork"), an article in the middle, the articles a and an (and the French un, une, des), and typos. One letter too many or too few makes the answer wrong.

In solo

Grading is automatic, with the rules above.

In multiplayer

In a room with friends, the room creator approves free-text answers. After the question, they see each player's answer next to the expected one and mark each as right or wrong (Accept all and Reject all are there to speed things up). So they can accept a variant or a small typo. The other players see a waiting message while this happens.

Quick Game and Competitive duels do not ask free-text questions.
