Ranking and matching

Updated on Sep 23, 2026

These two formats take several moves per question. Here is how to handle them, and why an almost right answer still earns points.

Ranking

The instruction tells you which way to sort, for example "Put the items in order: most recent at the top, oldest at the bottom".

  • Move: drag an item to its spot, or use its Move up and Move down arrows. With a keyboard, the up and down arrow keys move it by one place, Home and End send it to the very top or bottom.
  • Submit when you are happy with the order.

One simple rule guides the official quizzes: higher means more. A quantity puts the biggest or strongest at the top, and a chronology puts the most recent at the top and the oldest at the bottom. Two exceptions: a sequence of steps (a recipe, a story, the months of the year) starts with the first one, and a direction reads like a map, north at the top. When in doubt, trust the labels at the top and bottom of the list.

Grading: every well-placed item counts, but every misplaced item waters down your score. Only the exact order earns full points.

Matching

Two columns to link.

  • Link: tap an item on one side, then its match on the other side. You can start from the left or the right. The pair gets a number and a colour, and the right-hand item moves across to sit opposite its partner.
  • Undo: tap a tile that is already paired to free it and link it elsewhere. Reset undoes everything.
  • The last pair is made for you when only one free item is left on each side.

Grading: every correct pair counts, and every wrong pair waters down your score. Only a fully correct board earns full points.

In both cases, a partly right answer earns points but does not count as a correct answer for stars in solo. See How points are calculated.
